What basis is, in one paragraph

Basis is the local cash price minus the futures price it is quoted against: cash − futures, in dollars per bushel. It carries everything futures leave out — freight to the river, rail or processor that ultimately buys the grain, local supply and demand, storage space and the elevator’s margin. Inland elevators usually post a negative basis because grain has to be shipped toward an export port or a plant before it is worth the futures price, and that freight comes out of the bid. Basis tends to be weakest around harvest, when every bin fills at once, and to firm through winter and spring as supplies are drawn down; a processor or ethanol plant short of grain can flip that locally at any time.
