GDU Calculator
Auto-fetches actual accumulated heat units from your planting date using real historical weather data — no manual temperature entry needed. Track corn and soybean crop stage, project black layer date, and monitor season progress by field. Works anywhere in the continental US.
Enter your planting date and location, then click fetch. This calculator pulls actual daily high & low temperatures for every day since planting from the Open-Meteo weather archive and computes your exact accumulated GDUs — no manual entry, no guessing.

GDU/day = ((min(Hi,86) + max(Lo,50)) ÷ 2) − 50
High temp capped at 86°F — above this, corn growth doesn’t increase. Low floored at 50°F — below this, no heat accumulation.
GDUs to black layer ≈ (RM × 22) + 250
Example: 108-day hybrid ≈ 2,626 GDUs; 110-day ≈ 2,670. Based on Purdue/Pioneer catalog analysis. Always verify with your seed company’s published hybrid-specific GDU requirement.
Soybeans use the same base formula but are photoperiod-sensitive — flowering is triggered by day length (short-day plant), not GDUs alone. Maturity groups range from 0.5 (North Dakota) to 5.5 (Gulf Coast); check your local Extension for recommended MGs.
Real GDU fetch uses the Open-Meteo weather archive API — no API key required. Historical data is ERA5-based, validated against NOAA station data. Accuracy: typically ±2 GDU/day vs. on-farm weather stations.
