THE NUMBER
8
straight monthly cuts to 2026 beef output
USDA's October WASDE marked the eighth straight downgrade to beef production, a sign the cow herd has stopped shrinking but hasn't started growing.
Grain slips on fund selling
  • Corn is at $4.75½ overnight, down from Thursday's $4.78¼, with wheat off 9¼ cents at $6.60.
  • AgWeb reports more fund selling hit corn and beans as harvest pressure builds across the Belt.
  • Some traders are questioning whether USDA's 181.2 bushel corn yield estimate is too high, which would cut the other way.
Funds are selling into the harvest, not waiting for the yield debate to settle.
Cattle and feeders firm overnight
  • Live cattle are at $225.95 overnight, up 0.9% from Thursday's $223.90, and feeders gained 0.7% to $343.38.
  • Beef magazine notes October's WASDE marked the eighth straight monthly cut to 2026 beef production.
  • Hogs sit flat at $75.55 and milk firmed slightly to $15.26.
A herd that's stopped shrinking still isn't growing, and cattle keep finding support.
Crude heads for a weekly gain
  • WTI is at $95.73 overnight, down 2.3% from Thursday's $97.97, but still on track for a weekly gain.
Diesel stays the tighter, pricier story even as crude itself eases back today.
TODAY'S WATCH LIST
  • OngoingCorn back under $4.75 would say harvest supply is beating the fund short-covering bounce.
  • OngoingCrude holding above $95 through the weekend would confirm the Hormuz premium is sticking, not fading.
  • Monday 3:00 p.m. CTCrop Progress report; a faster-than-expected harvest pace could add more pressure on corn and beans.
OUTSIDE THE PITNot moving prices today, but worth knowing.
POLICY
Bill would widen cattle insurance to rebuild the herd
A House bill, the More Beef, Lower Prices Act, would add bred cattle, replacement heifers and cull cows to USDA's livestock risk protection program starting crop year 2027.
