Corn and beans drift lower as crop progress looms

Corn settled Monday at $4.83 and sits at $4.81¼ overnight, down less than two cents, while beans are off almost a nickel at $12.83. Both markets are flat because USDA's record crop numbers are already priced in, not because anyone expects news today.

THE NUMBER
16
billion bushels, USDA's corn crop estimate
USDA's October report put corn as the second biggest crop ever and soybeans as the biggest ever, a size the market is still digesting.
Grain finds its footing
  • Corn is at $4.81¼ overnight, down slightly after Friday's hard WASDE drop and a Monday session that mostly held steady.
  • USDA's own October numbers call for the second biggest corn crop ever and a record soybean crop, so the big supply is already known and priced.
The market already has the big crop news. Today is about digesting it, not reacting.
Cattle and hogs mixed overnight
  • Live cattle slipped to $224.75, down a tenth of a percent, after climbing for several sessions behind tight feeder supply.
  • Feeders eased to $343.48, a pause after recent gains, with no fresh Cattle on Feed data due for weeks.
  • Hogs bucked the trend, up seven tenths of a percent to $75.60.
Cattle cooling off after a run looks like a pause, not a turn.
Crude pulls back from Saudi move higher
  • WTI crude is at $91.86 overnight, down 2.0%, pulling back after Saudi Arabia pledged to keep exports flowing despite fresh Houthi missile attacks near Riyadh.
  • Saudi Arabia is also moving to expand pipeline capacity that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz, a long-term hedge against the kind of disruption that has pushed prices around all year.
Saudi Arabia answering supply fears with a pledge, not just words, is why crude eased.
TODAY'S WATCH LIST
  • Tuesday, Oct 13, 3:00 p.m. CTCrop Progress, delayed a day for Columbus Day; watch harvest pace against the five-year average.
  • Thursday, Oct 15, 7:30 a.m. CTWeekly export sales; corn sales need to hold up against the record crop size.
  • OngoingCorn back above $4.85 would say the Friday WASDE drop is done weighing on the board.
OUTSIDE THE PITNot moving prices today, but worth knowing.
