Irrigated cropland rents $271 per acre and non-irrigated $106 per acre in 2026, a gap that has held without clear direction since 2009. Irrigation covers 57 percent of harvested cropland, drawing 93 percent of its water from groundwater. Heat and drought caused 52 percent of crop insurance indemnities across 1989-2025, but that share has moved down each decade since: 66 percent in 1989-1999, 60 percent in 2000-2009, 52 percent in 2010-2019, 40 percent in 2020-2025. Corn yields trended up 1.3 bushels per acre a year over 2008-2025, with a median of 191.1 bushels per acre. Census land value reached $3,716 per acre in 2022, up 67.2 percent from 2017.
